If your glasses aren’t sitting comfortably on your face, it doesn’t mean you need a brand-new pair of frames. Sometimes, the smallest adjustment can make all the difference. From loosening new frames and tightening old ones to adjusting nose pads or wonky arms, there are simple ways to adjust your glasses in the comfort of your home.

How To Adjust Your Nose Pads

Nose pads help your glasses sit in the correct position on your nose. For people who wear glasses daily, ensuring your nose pads sit securely can make all the difference to your comfort levels. Follow these 5 easy steps to move your nose pads into the right spot.

1. Hold your frames with one hand and use the other to hold the nose pad between your thumb and forefinger
2. Slowly move the nose pad in or out into the right position
3. Repeat with the other nose pad
4. Try your glasses on to check the position and comfort
5. Continue the process until they’re in the correct position

Moving Your Frames Closer Or Farther From Your Eyes

Ideally, you want your glasses to sit as close to your eyes as possible – this is where they’re positioned to sit in line with your pupils. However, if you wish for your glasses to sit higher or lower down the bridge of your nose, you simply need to adjust the nose pads.

1. Hold your frames with one hand
2. With the other, hold both nose pad arms between your thumb and forefinger
3. Gently squeeze together to bring them closer so your glasses sit closer to your eyes
4. To move your glasses away from your eyes, push the nose pads away from the frame

How To Tighten The Arms On Your Glasses Frame

If you’re wearing glasses all day long, not to mention fiddling or playing with them, they can naturally loosen or stretch from their original positioning. This can result in your glasses slipping down your nose and becoming quite frustrating.

The good news is that there’s an easy fix. With a small flat-head screwdriver (remember those you used to get in Christmas crackers?!), tighten the screws in the hinges on each side of the arms. Try on your glasses and tighten them until they return to the correct position.

How To Adjust The Arms Of Your Glasses

If your plastic or metal frames are a little wonky, the most likely cause is uneven arms. This can easily be fixed by reshaping the arms of your glasses to fit on your face; without visiting the optician, you can make slight adjustments at home.

1. First, try on your glasses and mark on the arm where you want it to bend
2. Using a hot cup of water, hold the inside of the arm around the cup to heat the arm. Hold for about 20-30 seconds being careful not to burn yourself
3. Once warm, gently bend the arm straight to reset it
4. Reheat the inside of the arm again. This time, place your thumb on the mark you made earlier and gently bend the arm to the degree you want
5. Repeat the process until they are in the right position and feel comfortable on your face

Adjusting The Height Of Your Plastic Or Metal Frames

In order for your glasses to work effectively, they need to align with your pupils. If you’re finding your glasses are sitting too high or too low, there is an easy way to adjust them.

We mentioned how you can move the nose pads to bring your glasses closer to your eyes, this will also help adjust the height and is the best solution for metal glasses frames. To adjust the height of plastic frames, you can also try moving the position of the temple by doing the following:

1. Submerge your frames in warm water for 30-60 seconds
2. To lift your frames, gently bend the temple inwards
3. Try them on and adjust until they feel snug on your face
4. To lower your frames, bend the temples outwards
5. Try them on and adjust them until they fit and sit comfortably
6. Repeat on both sides of the temple until you reach your desired height
